Igniting Employability

High school.

South Africa has one of the highest youth unemployment rates of all developing countries across the world, according to the Policy Action Network (PAN): children. This statistic was reported in one of a series of topical guides published to highlight the current state of educational affairs in South Africa.

While there are several factors that contribute to this frightening statistic, one of the major influencers is a learnerā€™s level of education. Those who have better access to tertiary education, have the greatest chance of finding gainful employment, while those with a poorer standard of education are at far greater risk of becoming one of the thousands of unemployed youth that live in South Africa (this is especially true in our more vulnerable and disadvantaged communities).

This is where learner-based personal and career development plays a pivotal role. The choice of qualifications at tertiary level impacts the ability for young people to access the job market and cope with the demands of both tertiary studies as well as working life. Learner-based personal and career development ensures that people are working within the correct career field. This is a very clear and simple way to decrease the unemployment rate caused by individuals leaving their first job and not having enough experience to find subsequent employment thereafter.

As previously stated by Panyaza Lesufi (Gauteng MEC for Education), ā€œAs youth unemployment and poverty becomes the most serious problems facing the country and, while, ironically, along with this unemployment, we are facing a growing shortage of appropriate skills, many high school seniors will soon be preparing for their final year of education before heading to university, Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges or the work force. The shortage of scarce skills, an oversupply of low-demand skills, high tertiary dropout rates, and too many idle youth, are all symptomatic of poor career planning. Career Guidance is vital and important for the development of the country.ā€
