Primary school.
The most important school-related factors influencing learner performance are competent and motivated teachers. Global studies have shown that where Foundation and Intermediate Phase teaching are being implemented effectively, there are clear and definitive outcomes associated with overall improvements made in learner literacy, numeracy as well as holistic well-being.
An effective approach to Foundation and Intermediate Phase content delivery can reduce inequalities linked to socio-economic conditions within our more vulnerable and disadvantaged communities. The Foundation and Intermediate Phase should meet the needs of all children through developmental, experimental, and active learning. Through carefully planned engaging activities, the 21st century child should practice and consolidate their skills, use their creativity and imagination, take risks, solve problems, and make decisions individually as well as in groups.
Our Brainwave Foundation and Intermediate Phase action plan sets out an approach to continuously improve the way in which the National Curriculum is delivered within our supported primary schools (aligned with the national framework time frames). We execute school-based actions to support and share learning on effective practice and ongoing staff development, while maintaining momentum in the delivery of Foundation and Intermediate Phase content within the classroom environment.
Brainwaveās approach to the implementation of a primary school enrichment projects and programmes:
- A blended teaching approach that includes teacher training, school-based workshops, school visits and reflection by all project stakeholders to obtain the best possible project and programme results.
- Active differentiation according to the needs of the teacher means that Brainwave would be able to draw on a vast resource bank to support the teacher.
- Professional development and scaffolding of teachers and School Management Teams (SMTās).
- Higher level pedagogical development in the form of subject forum discussions.
- Pace setters for those teachers battling to complete the curriculum timeously.
- Scripted lesson plans for those teachers that require further support.
- Implementation of project-based quality assurance frameworks.
- Brainwave monitoring tools to facilitate and track the above.
It is essential that primary school projects and programmes like those facilitated through Brainwave be implemented within our more vulnerable and disadvantaged primary schools to ensure that the support and development provided to our supported teachers has a direct and positive impact on their learnerās progress and academic performance. The end-goal is to ensure that we have academically competent Grade 7 learners that exit primary school with the best opportunity for success in high school (and ultimately at tertiary level).
