Youth unemployment is on the rise in South Africa.
Youth unemployment is on the rise in South Africa. According to the NRF (National Research Foundation), some of the reasons for South Africa’s high youth unemployment rate include:
- No Teritary Qualification
Without a formal tertiary qualification, many youth find it difficult to enter the job market after having completed Grade 12 as our public education system fails to teach basic skills that employers require (such as basic literacy and numeracy skills).
- No Career Guidance
Most of our public schools offer very little to no career guidance. This leaves our youth lacking vital information on the interests and abilities that best match who they are as a unique individual, as well as their tertiary study/skill development training options they have after having completed Grade 12.
- Lack of Social Networks
Our youth lack social networks which could potentially help leverage important information such as tertiary study options, the labour market, job availability and ultimate job success.
- Lack of Labour-related resources
A lack of tertiary and labour-related resources within our public and higher education sectors e.g. affordable skill development training, student financial aid, lack of space at public universities etc.
- Systemic and socio-economic issues
Systemic and socio-economic issues within our more vulnerable and disadvantaged communities.
We have come to realisation that our government alone is not able to create sufficient employment opportunities for our unemployed youth. There needs to be greater government private sector partnerships in place if we wish to implement and enable long-term employability solutions for our unemployed youth in South Africa.
